The Anne Arundel Soil Conservation District participates in a variety of programs designed to educate the public in Anne Arundel County and throughout the State of Maryland about the issues facing our natural resources.

Anne Arundel County Envirothon

2022 Anne Arundel County Envirothon

Our Local Envirothon spring training and competition will be in person in 2022. The Anne Arundel County Envirothon is a hands-on environmental problem-solving competition for high school-aged students. Participating teams complete training and testing in five natural resource categories: i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues. This year’s current topic is Waste to Resources.

Training for Anne Arundel County students will be at the Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center on March 14, 2022.

Our county competition will also be held at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center and will be on April 4, 2022.

The State Envirothon competition will be held at Mount St. Mary’s College on June 22-23
Mount St. Mary’s College is located at 16300 Old Emmitsburg Rd, Emmitsburg, MD 21727
The winner of the state competition will advance to the National Competition.

Last year’s winners of the State Competition were:

Winning 1st in every category was Richard Montgomery High School Team A (Montgomery County)
2nd place: Harford Christian School Changing Tides (Harford County)
3rd place: Allegany High School Monsteras (Allegany County)
4th place: Southern Garrett High School Southern Stoneflies (Garrett County)
5th place: Richard Montgomery High School Team B (Montgomery County)

The National Competition will be held at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio on July 24-30, 2022.

Last year’s winner of 2021 National Competition, taking the top prize of $15,000 were students from Esopus, New York.

MASCD Coloring Contest

The AASCD proudly sponsors an coloring contest in association with the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts (MASCD) each Spring. Elementary schools throughout Anne Arundel are invited to participate in the local coloring contest.
